Your skin is the largest organ of your body. It’s porous yet water resistant, flexible yet durable, and it works to keep your organs and bones safe from the threat of infection and exposure to the elements. When a serious injury happens to your skin, however, an unsightly and painful scar can be left behind.
The physical and psychological pain of these scars can have a negative effect on the life of an accident victim. Therefore, personal injury plaintiffs may want to include claims relating to scarring in their lawsuits. Here are several types of scarring injuries that plaintiffs might reference in their lawsuits:
Keloid scars: Some people are genetically prone to developing a keloid scar. These scars happen when the body engages in an aggressive healing process. They move into uninjured areas. A severe keloid scar can inhibit the victim’s movements and cause pain and suffering in the area. Darker-skinned individuals are more prone to developing keloid scars.
Contracture scars: Individuals with contracture scars suffer from impaired movement because of the way the scar has tightened the skin. These scars may be more than just skin deep. They may extend into the nerves and muscles of the body. Individuals with burn injuries are more prone to developing contracture scars.
Hypertrophic scars: These scars are not unlike keloid scars. However, they involve a raised, red area of skin that doesn’t extend further than the injury site.
Do you have one of the above types of scars caused by a serious car accident or some other kind of accident? If you feel that you are in pain or suffering from disfigurement because of it, you might want to investigate whether another party may be at fault and/or liable for your suffering and damages relating to the scar.
