How to Report Dangerous Indianapolis Intersections and Road Conditions
Each of us knows an Indiana intersection or road that is particularly dangerous.
Maybe you regularly see an accident on a specific part of your commute? Perhaps it’s an interstate or highway with large potholes or chuckholes? A missing roadway sign? Or maybe it’s a dangerous street near your home?
No matter the condition or location, it is important for Hoosiers to be aware of the many unpublished dangers when traveling throughout Indianapolis and on our state’s various interstates and highways.
Specifically, we have done two prior blogs on Indianapolis’s most dangerous intersections:
- Where are the Most Dangerous Intersections in Central Indiana?
- Where are Indianapolis’s Most Dangerous Intersections?
And after posting these blogs to our Facebook page, we received a number of comments from friends who listed Indianapolis intersections and streets they believed to be dangerous:

Free Case ReviewWith so much feedback and interest in these blogs and FB posts, we thought it would be helpful to let you know how you can officially file a dangerous road condition with the state of Indiana or your local county.
File a Dangerous Indiana Road Report
The first step in filing this report is to make sure you contact the proper authorities for the right condition, otherwise, it may not receive the appropriate response or investigation.
If you are reporting a dangerous condition related to one of Indiana’s interstates, U.S. highways, or state highways, Hoosiers should start by contacting the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) by either calling direct at 855-INDOT4U (855-463-6848) or filling out their online form.
If you wish to report a pothole or chuckhole condition on a city street or county road, you should contact either the maintenance department for the corresponding city or county
If you are trying to report a dangerous intersection or other condition(s) on a city road inside Marion County, you should start by visiting the Mayor’s Action Center website or calling them direct at 317-327-4622.
Indianapolis Roadway Safety Studies
To help ensure the safety and upkeep of our roadways, a federally mandated agency named the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) oversees transportation planning and improvement matters throughout central Indiana.
Over the years, the MPO has released a number of studies related to dangerous roadways and intersections, however, one of the more serious reports documented Central Indiana’s Incapacitated & Fatality Crashes occurring between 2015 – 2019.
(Incapacitated crashes are collisions that leave one or more person(s) seriously injured and unable to continue their normal, everyday activities. Common incapacitating injuries include broken bones, brain injuries, or other serious condition(s).)
Additionally, the MPO has gathered data that includes a 2019 Safety Study identifying 24 high-crash locations and a 2016 study that listed the top 50 most dangerous intersections.
Ultimately, a serious car accident can happen at any time and anywhere. What’s important is that you stay alert, avoid distractions, drive safe for the conditions, and always follow the posted road signs.
However, if you or a loved one are involved in an accident, please consider contacting an accident attorney with your questions regarding the next steps.
Questions About an Indianapolis Car Accident?
Whether or not you hire an attorney, it’s important to fully understand your rights following an Indiana car accident. Insurance companies will not be working in your best interests–their goal is to pay out as little money as possible on injury claims.
For this reason, we recommend that you contact an experienced Indianapolis personal injury attorney that offers free legal consultations. Understanding your rights helps to ensure you don’t make a mistake that could cost you some or all of deserved compensation.
