Big vs. Small Personal Injury Law Firms: Which Should You Choose?
Small by design. Attorney Matt Boulton’s vision for his law firm did not include television commercials, direct mail solicitations to accident victims, or city buses wrapped with his face and logo.
Matt had previous experience working for a mega-firm that spent millions on advertisements to make the phone continually ring. And while that approach works for some firms, he decided to offer injured Hoosiers a law firm that did things differently.
Today, the same choice faces many Indiana accident victims: Big firm or small firm?
However, before discussing some of the potential differences between large and small personal injury law firms, we ultimately recommend that you select an attorney that makes you feel comfortable and best matches your specific legal needs.
Choosing a Big Firm
As mentioned above, many people may recognize big-name firms for their various styles and volume of advertisement, law office slogans, and call jingles.
It is no secret that advertising works, but large firms that choose to spend hundreds of thousands (or millions) in advertisements may also be forced to operate a high-volume practice.

Free Case ReviewIn other words, mega-advertisers must have a continual stream of clients to help supplement their ad budget. Is there anything wrong with this? Not at all. It simply comes down to their business model choice.
However, with that in mind, there are some questions you may wish to ask if you are considering choosing a big law firm, such as:
- Is the person answering the phone an actual firm employee, or is it a call center representative answering the phones for dozens of law firms?
- Will the attorney be involved in my case, or will the strategy and oversight be largely handled by a paralegal or case manager?
- Is your firm actually handling my case, or will it be referred to another firm that has more experience with my case type?
- Is the person in your TV ads an actual attorney or a spokesperson?
- Will the attorney I initially meet with actually be handling my case?
- What is the employee turnover rate at the firm?
- How many case files does each attorney and/or paralegal handle at any given time?
- Does the attorney have actual courtroom experience with my case type?
These types of questions are not to suggest that big law firms are less capable of providing a satisfactory client experience, however, it is important to inquire about the firm’s approach to client service so that your expectations are properly aligned.
What About the Small Firm?
While we cannot speak for all small firms, we are able to provide you with a more detailed set of expectations and insights specific to Boulton Law Group:
- Matt personally reviews and assesses every contact received at our firm. Your case will not be analyzed by an intake professional or legal assistant. Instead, it goes straight to the top.
- When you call our firm, you are speaking to a Boulton Law Group legal professional. We do not outsource our phone calls.
- Matt hand-picked his longstanding legal team. Every legal professional at Boulton Law Group knows the ins and outs of each client’s case because we are not continually losing employees and training new ones.
- Matt values close, personal relationships with clients vs. high case counts. For this reason, he believes mass advertising would not match his firm’s culture, or provide clients with a truly tailored experience.
- Speaking of advertising models, because Boulton Law Group largely retains clients through referrals and statewide reputation, it allows us to dedicate more of our legal fees to improving firm processes, infrastructure, and technology, which ultimately improve the client experience.
- We know our clients by name! Matt is selective in the cases he chooses to accept, and this allows for him and his team to truly get to know the client and understand the finest details of their case. It also means we do not outsource your case.
- Boulton Law Group focuses exclusively on a handful of case types to help ensure we understand every last ounce of the law regarding your legal needs. We accept the following case types:
- Matt negotiates and/or goes to trial on behalf of his clients. Negotiations and courtroom work are not handed off to an associate or junior attorney.
- Matt never finalizes a case without the client being fully informed. Before a case settles, Matt will advise every client of the potential case value, the strengths of each case, and whether or not he believes compensation can be maximized by going to trial.
